Why Do We Think This is Important?
It’s important because literate, confident women and girls become active participants in their communities. They take ownership of social and economic progress, driving innovation, promoting sustainable development, and fostering economic growth.
A McKinsey Global Institute report in 2015 found that by narrowing the global gender gap there could be multitrillion-dollar economic benefits to be shared: a 26 per cent boost could be added to the global gross domestic profit by 2025.
Investing in female literacy and leadership skills creates a ripple effect that benefits society as a whole.
Room To Read
Room to Read is working to eliminate illiteracy and gender inequality around the world, based on the precept that the single best approach to improving the status of women is through education.
Research conclusively proves that educated women are healthier, earn more income for their families, and make greater contributions to their communities. That’s why Room to Read is supporting more girls to stay in school, build skills to succeed academically, and negotiate key life decisions, and that’s why we’re proud to support Room To Read’s Girls Education programme.
The Hunger Project
The Hunger Project advocates sustainable, community-led solutions to hunger and poverty in rural villages in Africa, India, Bangladesh, and Latin America. Their programmes reach 16 million people, unlocking creativity, resilience, and leadership skills to help them transform their lives and communities and to end hunger.
The Hunger Project also focuses on equipping women to step up as community leaders and shape solutions to problems which fall disproportionately on them. This is why we’re proud supporters of THP’s Unleashed Women network.
This programme supports grassroots projects that support mothers to give their children access to quality healthcare; young girls to stay in school and reach their potential; and all women to access micro-finance loans and financial literacy training to start businesses and achieve financial independence.
